British Museum

With the transfer of the British Library in March 1998, architectural firm Foster + Partners had the opportunity to recreate the museum's courtyard, the heart of the building which provides access to every section.

The Great Court is a space dedicated as much to the citizens of London as to its visitors, and the grand Round Reading Room was opened to the public for the first time. The most significant design choice was the decision to cover the Great Court, which would become the largest undercover courtyard in Europe with the addition of an undulating glass roof covering an area of 6100 square metres.

The project involved a wide range of new structures: new galleries and exhibition spaces, auditoriums, classrooms and studios, shops, bars and restaurants gave the museum a new programmatic quality. Tecno were tasked with creating all of the furnishing custom-designed by Foster + Partners, who selected the company for its ability to adapt its products to meet their project requirements, always ensuring the highest quality standards.

Designed by Norman Foster
